In summary

  • None of these disciplines is better than the other

  • They are complementary disciplines

  • If we take a step back and look at the history of design, we see that they all come from the same history, so after all they aren't that different

  • The decision on focusing on one or the other for your career should be made by looking at: your skills, your passion and your local job market.

What is more valuable UX, UI, Service Design?

The short answer is none is more valuable than the other.

Let's spend more than two seconds to answer this question.

To me, all of these practices are just what they are. They are different practices. They are different skills and they work together really well.

A helpful comparaison

Imagine if we ask the same question when it comes to producing movies.

Is directing better than editing?

Is costume design better than the writing of the story?

I don't think so.

They build on each other

But what I'm sure of is that in order to make a good movie, you need all of these disciplines to work together.

It's rather a personal question

The other thing that I see is that different types of people tend to be better in different roles.

And certain jobs are more in demand and specific regions or specific industries.

So the question here is not that much to say is UI better than UX or Service Design, but rather to understand:

  • Where is Service Design the better fit?

  • Where is UI the better fit?

  • And to whom?

This is a perspective that is very important to me.

Disciplines with a similar historical background

Instead of comparing each other to see which is the better practice, instead could we just recognize that there are different practices and see how they complement each other and maybe how they build on each other.

Because remember, Service Design didn't invent everything.

UI didn't invent everything.

There is a huge history that made these practices what they are today.

So if you're still interested in this question of what is better, I'd recommend that you first look at the history of where these practices come from.

And maybe that can help you answer that question, or maybe it will just reveal that all of these practices come from the same historical backgrounds.
